Name of designer: Roderic Wong (China)
Age: 27
Name of Collection: Tissue of being

  1. What made you participate in the Audi Star Creation? How did you hear about it?
I heard about Audi Star Creation from my lecturer Liz Thng last year. She suggested that I should give it a shot. I am looking forward to show my work on the bigger stage. What’s more exciting is the one-year internship for FJ Benjamin in Singapore. The experience of living and working in such a multi-cultural country will be good for me in the long run.

  1. What was the inspiration behind your collection?
I chanced upon a book on human anatomy while looking for inspiration for my collection. I was initially disgusted by the graphic nature of the images. However, as I read on I developed a fascination with the intricacies of human tissue, and decided to base Tissue of Being, on it. My collection also pays homage to craftsmanship as I am applying handmade felting techniques on my pieces to create textures and build three dimensional shapes.

  1. What new ideas/approach do you think you bring to the fashion scene in the region?
During my time in college, I realized the importance of fabric manipulation. Personally, I think that it might be next big trend in fashion design. I believe it was my texture design that helped me make the cut in this competition, and will probably be part of my signature style in the future.

  1. Any Asian designers/labels that you like and look up to?
I really admire Japanese designers Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, and Yohji Yamamoto. I wish one day I will also rock the fashion world in my unique style, just like them.

  1. What would you like to do if you win and who would be your target audience (people in the region, age group, style, etc...)?
I’m going to start on my next project… there are too many ideas in my head right now.

My collection can be worn by women from the age from 22 to 35 who know how to perfectly balance latest fashion trends and classic sophistication, and appreciate all types of design. Most of them are creative people, who would do unexpected things, and would wear anything crazy. The clean lines matched with fine fabrics and exciting details in my garments will be the perfect choice for them.
