Q&A with Wey Ling of Veira: Singapore’s alternative ‘It’ bags

Although I’m much more of a ‘shoe gal’ than a ‘handbag gal’, I still get week knees for funky arm candy which explains my recent obsession with the Singaporean handbag label Veira.

Quirky, cute, and very unique, the bags which Veira produces are the total opposite of the now too-common monogram designer bags which I’m proud to say I have none of in my closet. I just don’t get the appeal.

What I do get though, is the appeal of these handbags which are a mixture of everything I love: their structure is inspired by vintage but they are modern and edgy with eye-catching and fun details. They are quite mood-lifting in a way.

This Teatime Kisslock bag is so cute and I just love the classic frame!

I love the fact that most of these statement bags, from cute clutches to big travel totes, are made of various material like canvas and denim which makes them durable, more hip and less expensive without looking cheap. Even the leather bags look well-made and minimal accessories means they’re not going to look dated anytime soon.

Since Singaporean ladies seem to be a little colour-shy, I think these bags would be a great complement to an otherwise plain outfit and would instantly take any look from being bland to super stylish with a character. They would go particularly great with a simple LBD or a simple dress of any colour for that matter.

Naturally, someone who is adding to the Singaporean style scene some much needed edge would be great to talk to, and so I had a small Q&A with Wey Ling, the designer behind Veira bags to tell us more about her label and the inspiration behind it:

The envelope clutch adds a dash of fun for any LBD

Q: What is Veira?

Veira handbags are quirky statement bags that are relevant, timeless and playful. In order to achieve this, we make a lot of reference to vintage silhouettes. The idea came about because we believe that classic-meets-modern styles are trends with no end.

Q: When did it start and why?
Veira had just celebrated one year anniversary recently. No other reason besides love for handbags. Well, maybe endless hours of shopping and trend spotting did contribute to the entire process. We truly believe that bags are not merely functional items that help ladies carry our necessary belongings around but it is also a significant preference in succeeding the fashion style we desire. Hence, Veira bags are created for the fashion-smart woman who is chic, confident and bold enough to be herself.

Q: The inspiration behind it
If our bags were to be celebrities, they will be like Twiggy meets Rachel Bilson.
For design conceptualization, we get inspiration every day. We learn from anything that we observe daily, arising from the simplest things in life such as the newspaper, magazine, art/advertisement displays, blogs and creative artworks.

Mix serious with fun, why not? This Vintage Snap clutch is the perfect
combination of both

In general, I like them all the same but if I have to choose then perhaps the suede envelope clutch, airmail vacation suitcase, mini hat bag, vintage snap clutch, tea time kisslock bag, drawstring bucket tote bag. Well, I can go on...it's really difficult to choose just one or two, I am biased :D
